Even under the current most optimistic case, the production of GLP-1 therapies might only reach approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of eligible patients, as stated by the health organization.

The guideline urges countries and companies to expand access, by strategies such as voluntary licensing.

A patent on a key compound – the main ingredient of a leading brand – is due to expire in a number of nations in 2026.

These medications mimick a biological compound to slow digestion, curb appetite and increase satiety so users eat less.
