A recent study reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these medications should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
